Google Summer of Code is a global program focused on bringing more student developers into open source software development. Students work with an open source organization on a 3 month programming project during their break from school. Mentors provide guidance such as pointers to useful documentation, code reviews, etc. In addition to providing students with feedback and pointers, a mentor acts as an ambassador to help student contributors integrate into their project’s community.
Mentors play a crucial role in the program by guiding students during projects’ development. They will help and teach students, set realistic goals and review their code when needed. That’s the reason why mentors should be familiar with their project code base. Mentoring for Google summer of Code requires commitment and dedicated time during the project period.
